Wait until after the average last frost — around April 15–20 — before putting out warm-season annuals like petunias, marigolds, and impatiens. Cool-season color such as pansies and violas can go out in late March or again in fall. Perennials, trees, and shrubs establish best planted in fall (September–October) or early spring, and spring bulbs like tulips and daffodils go in the ground in October–November.
Core-aerate cool-season lawns in the fall — September into October — ideally right before overseeding so the seed drops into the holes. Fall aeration relieves the summer compaction that NOVA's heavy clay builds up and sets up thick spring growth. Spring aeration is possible but can open the door to summer weeds.
